Simple Simon Says… Make Disciples
Posted By :Date :Krish Kandiah | 05-27-2014
Francis Chan certainly has a direct way of challenging the way we go about fulfilling the mission Christ commissioned his church to complete. Francis Chan - Making Disciples from Verge Network on Vimeo. Of course the challenge is what does disciple making actually look like. I have been thinking about this for a while now, see the suite of resources we have collated here. I have been thinking on how we create disciples that are not just clones of celebrity church leaders or so fragile that their faith falls apart during…

LIMITED CHURCH: UNLIMITED KINGDOM Uniting Church and Family in the Great Commission by Robert Rienow Let me start my review of this book on p. 209 I will explain why later. There are some very helpful ideas on how we as Church leaders can encourage parents to take the lead in discipling there children. .. 1. Families Take the lead in discipleship Ask preachers and youth group leaders to give families a heads up on what they will be teaching next week and lead church and youth ministry with the…

I am surprised that more people haven't seen this cute little video about discipleship. It's only 2 minutes long but manages to raise some good challenges to the church about what the point of church is. There's lots to like about it. - The emphasis on church as a disciplemaking community - The emphasis on equipping for ministry - The emphasis on interpersonal discipleship rather simply rotas and programmes - The emphasis on whole life discipleship - in work, arts and business But have a little watch and see if…

If we are going to see the gospel of Jesus make the impact in the lives of Christians and in the cultures we live in – effective discipleship is the decisive task of the church.   Discipleship is the core calling of all Christians yet many would argue that is our failure to do this basic task that has meant that we have lost confidence to share our faith; struggled to find energy or motivation to transform our communities; inadequately challenge issues of global poverty and injustice. Sadly lack of…

I know its not even Easter yet but some churches are pulling together ideas for the teaching programmes so i thought I would share with you a few ideas for teaching series. Regular followers of the blog will know that I am a big fan of consecutive expository preaching series. I have a blog brewing on how to decide which biblical books to look at in which order for a church - so keep an eye out for that. In the mean time we have a couple of books that…

What do young people actually think of the church?
Posted By :Date :Krish Kandiah | 02-26-2012
As you may know there is an Evangelical Alliance Council meeting this week. We are looking at how we help young people to develop resilient adult faith. There's been some really helpful comments on this subject already here. Council members are asked to talk to some young people before they come to the event and to ask the following three questions. Would love to ask you to have the same conversation with some young people you know and post the results below. 1. What is the best thing about church?…

I am because you are…

My friends at the Langham Partnership have a great project to help the church recover Christlikeness as a priority in Christian living and leadership. I was asked to talk about someone who had modelled Christlikeness to me and the following video tells a bit of the story of Nigel Lee's influence on my life. There are so many others that have helped shape my life it reminded me of the South African idea of Ubuntu "I am because of you are..."   So here's a little exercise that may be…

3 ways to rethink Student Discipleship
Posted By :Date :Krish Kandiah | 01-19-2012
A student ministry leader asked me recently for my advice about follow up from a university mission. So here are my thoughts, as usual very open to your suggestions and ideas. The more I think about this subject the more urgent that we get this right not just for the new Christians but for everyone. We are still seeing huge losses in terms of 20-30s from the church and some would argue student ministry needs to take seriously its responsibility not just to help students do evangelism at university but…

Hate Religion Love Jesus
Posted By :Date :Krish Kandiah | 01-12-2012
Here's a video that's doing the rounds on twitter. It's not perfect, but there's some great things to enjoy about it. Five things i like: 1. Some great rhymes - religion say do, Jesus says done religion says slave, Jesus says son 2. A willingness to face and name the hypocrisy of the church its important for us not to whitewash the church but reform it and many people will not listen to the gospel until we have acknowledged the mess the church has often made of following Christ. 3.…

I want to do some thinking out loud about how the church encourages and develops spiritual growth in young people. Here are some questions I am wrestling with as I think about how our church helps with the growth and spiritual formation of our children and young people. As you can see i have lots more questions than answers - so very happy to be part of a conversation on this - let me know your thoughts. Very happy for you to suggest books, bible passages or web pages I…
