World Christian Movement Volume II: Modern Christanity from 1454 to 1800 Dale T. Irvin & Scott W. Sunquist I had a strange feeling as I read a book about missionary heroes to my children each bedtime. Each hero was a white man who had travelled from the West to save the poor natives. I had another strange feeling as I read a recent book about the Spiritual danger of doing good written by a CEO of a Christian microfinance development charity where we learnt a lot about the author and…

I admit that I was drawn to this video by the spectacle of watching Chandler Bing (aka Matthew Perry) get grilled by Jeremy Paxman. But instead Paxman is strangely absent from the debate leaving Peter Hitchens to rule the floor. [youtube link="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDtIZZiySgA" width="590" height="315"] Four things I learned from this conversation 1. Empathy is vital to communication Peter Hitchens comes across as particularly cold in this debate. He denies Chandler's experience of addiction and ends up resorting to cheap pot shots in the argument. Chandler however opens up about his…

I know I can definitely get out of the wrong side of bed and take a contrarian view on things from time to time. I know that if we love God then we want his name and reputation to be well represented in the public square. I know that when Christians create music or art it can sometimes be cringe worthy. So when the US blockbuster series “The Bible” hit the UK last week on Channel 5 I understood why some of my brothers and sisters in the church…

Sticky Faith Launch Kit I am a big fan of the Sticky Faith movement. I had the privilege of meeting up and interviewing Kara Powell its director for Youthwork Magazine when I visited Fuller a couple of years ago. So I was delighted to receive a review copy of this new resource. Design I love the design of the book. Its printed on high quality paper and uses some excellent fonts and design features to help get the message across. This might seem like an unimportant detail but it just…

5 reasons preachers should read widely:   1.    Reading widely helps you connect with people William Nicholson the screenwriter gives CS Lewis a fantastic line in the film Shadowlands: “We read to know we are not alone.” As we read we encounter another person’s inner voice. We see life through the author’s eyes. Getting to know the author through the books we read is a great training ground for developing empathy; seeing the world from another person's perspective; something that a mature preacher is good at. But reading widely gives…

I got to see an advance preview of this film and I loved it. Short Term 12 is a residential care home for young adults. It is staffed by a team of twenty somethings who act as security guards, drug inspectors, counsellors and friends to the young people from troubled backgrounds. The film centres around the relationships of two of the staff: Grace and Mason and two of the young residents of the Short Term 12: Jayden and Marcus. It is Nate’s first dayt working as a carer at the…

LIMITED CHURCH: UNLIMITED KINGDOM Uniting Church and Family in the Great Commission by Robert Rienow Let me start my review of this book on p. 209 I will explain why later. There are some very helpful ideas on how we as Church leaders can encourage parents to take the lead in discipling there children. .. 1. Families Take the lead in discipleship Ask preachers and youth group leaders to give families a heads up on what they will be teaching next week and lead church and youth ministry with the…

Its a new term and so new opportunities to help your children go deeper in their faith. I have come across two new resources that are designed to help primary school children take their faith deeper. I am really keen to find new resources, so I thought I would post these two reviews in the hope that it opens up a conversation. The first is a book I was really excited to receive: Thoughts to Make your Heart Sing Sally Lloyd Jones and Jago This book is gorgeous. The feel…

So we are back with a new term ahead. Singing new songs helps us to appreciate the greatness of God by expressing his praise with new words and new tunes. So because i had the chance to visit a few of the festivals this Summer I thought I'd share some of the songs that were new to me. Happy to hear your recommendations too.     List of Songs Here for You, Matt Redman At your Name, Phil Wickham Beautiful Things, Gungor We are the Free, Matt Redman In Tenderness,…

New Horizon is a big Christian festival in Northern Ireland’s Northcoast town of Coleraine. The event takes over a University campus for a week, putting up a large 3500 seater tent and uses university facilities for seminars, youthwork and sports. There are probably about 5000 people on site from all over Ireland with some fantastic youth and children's ministry going on during the day.   1 Hospitality There was a wonderful sense of generosity and hospitality – the stewards, staff and guests modelled a very welcoming and warm disposition which…
