Lausanne shift on the gospel?

The lausanne movement was pioneered by the incredibly humble and gifted duo of John Stott and Billy Graham. So it was with interest I came across this new video on their website. I was pleased to see that as a month of prayer is focussed around the subject "What is the gospel?" As you may know we have been thinking hard about this subject to make sure that we are being biblically faithful. John Stott's work helped the church re-engage with the call to engage in holistic mission and so…

Tomorrow sees the next in our series of national consultations on helping the church gain Confidence in the Gospel. NT Wright (who was in the middle of editing his new book on Paul) was kind enough to make time to speak to us to give his views on the subject "What is the Gospel?" watch this short film and let me know what you think? How does Tom's approach challenge your own? Is there an emphasis you think he missed out? [vimeo link="http://vimeo.com/54601664" width="590" height="332"] There are some helpful resources…

I am surprised that more people haven't seen this cute little video about discipleship. It's only 2 minutes long but manages to raise some good challenges to the church about what the point of church is. There's lots to like about it. - The emphasis on church as a disciplemaking community - The emphasis on equipping for ministry - The emphasis on interpersonal discipleship rather simply rotas and programmes - The emphasis on whole life discipleship - in work, arts and business But have a little watch and see if…

Being Christlike has got to be the top priority for any Christian. Our latest book aims to help you do that by reflecting on the person on Jesus and the ways he calls us to be like him, speak like him and act like him in the power of his Holy Spirit. I spent a week teaching about this with Jude Trenier from Ireland, at the recent Spring Harvest event and each day we gave 10 practical ways to put this all into practice. So I thought I would post…

Here's the script of what I shared with Christian Aid staff today: “Lest we forget”, in just three words images of poppy fields, trenches, medals, the strains of the Last Post and a heavy silence are evoked. The phrase is pregnant with meaning and memory. The three words “our daily bread” is equally evocative in the Lord’s prayer. To its first hearers Jesus’ words would have triggered reactions three responses: memory, solidarity and glory. Memory Our daily bread triggers a flash back. To a tiny band of refugees fleeing from…

Here's a great little video from #If campaign which is promoting putting the issue of global hunger clearly "on the table" at the G8 summit this summer. With Britain hosting the event - raising public awareness on this issue can give the world leaders enough political leverage to act decisively on this issue. [youtube link="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-E3iPJZ6_g" width="590" height="315"] If you want to get involved with the campaign, I'd recommend Tearfund as a route in. Sign up here.

I believe the future of Christian influence in the UK will be different from the past. It will not be due to a top down assertion of power, but rather the faithful presence of Christians who live for God's kingdom in every sphere of society. If we catch a vision for this we will not only see more young adults survive into a life of mature adult faith we will see the light of the gospel not just transform lives but our institutions and culture too. With this in mind…

Here's a fantastic video on the secret to remaining passionately committed to justice. To be honest it helps to explain why I believe adoption is the seed idea that will transform our churches to being communities that seek to demonstrate and proclaim the love of God. Once we see justice not as an abstract concept but caring for those we love, not in a partisan way, but in a loving your neighbour, loving your enemy way; then we will spend ourselves seeking justice. Watch it and let me know what…

Enjoying spending time with the Salt and Light national leaders conference, here in sunny Teeside. Its been a pleasure to rub shoulders with so many mission minded leaders keen to explore ways of reaching their communities. I have been running a stream called “Engage” focussing on connecting the gospel with the opportunities, longings and challenges of our culture. I have enjoyed the warm hospitality of this network of churches on numerous occasions and in my experience they have a wonderful family trait of humility and generosity. Openness to Connect with…

Really excited to be working with UCCF in the Midlands to help equip students to get a vision for life beyond university. Here's the rough cut of script I recorded today for students going to the Midlands new leaders training weekend this week. Friends there’s a national crisis in the church with what has become known as the missing generation. Christians aged between 20 and 30 are the least likely to attend church across the UK. In fact nationally they are half as likely to go to church as any…
