5 things I learned from James K.A. Smith

I'm a big fan of Smith's work I have have enjoyed three of his books so far. Who's Afraid of Postmodernity Desiring the Kingdom Imaging the Kingdom Desiring the Kingdom has without doubt been the most influential in my thinking and informs the 5 ideas outlined in this post. 1. We need to rethink our strategy of Christian discipleship in light of a Christian understanding of the person I was brought up in a tradition that primarily aimed at the head as the core of the person. Romans 12:2 was…

It is often said that people treat church’s a little like helicopters... ...we keep our distance so we don’t get caught up in the rotas. I have been studying the book of Romans for a new Bible study resource for small groups. I have been reflecting on Romans 8:1 [quote_simple]Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death [/quote_simple] Sadly in church rather…

I have been wrestling with the question of how we help our children and young people become adult members of the church for some time. I am going to be giving the opening address at the Family Ministry conference in a couple of weeks with the title "It Takes a Whole church."  So I thought I would give some time to reflect on what it is we are trying to see happen in the lives of the children and young people in church life. Strangely we often don't think about…

Hope you are as challenged by it as I was. If you would like to find out more about what was discussed at the Lausanne gathering check here:

Looking forward to speaking tonight on the challenge of the missing generation at New Horizon tonight, exploring why so many 20-30s are walking away from church. A little while back Os Guinness argued that the reason that 20 somethings are leaving the church in droves in the USA is because of the [quote_simple]"ugliness of the Christian right"[/quote_simple]. You can see him arguing that here: ( around 11 mins in). My work with The Evangelical Alliance has focussed a lot on this area. So I would really love your wisdom on…

Evangelicals have a fantastic tradition both of caring for the poor and of strengthening the family . Sadly we often keep these two concerns separate from one another and may have thereby inadvertently exacerbated underlying problems. In this short paper I propose six theological theses that may help us both understand and redress the balance. 1. The family is an essential part of God’s shalom and necessary for the flourishing of creation. The first thing that is said to be wrong in the universe – even before the fall –…

What a privilege to spend time with Tom Wright and get to talk about evangelism, mission and contextualisation. Everything he says here is off the cuff which is a measure of the breadth of his learning and his communication skills. Tom shows us what we can learn from both Jesus and the Apostle Paul's approach to faithful relevance. I deliberately asked Tom what he though of the idea that Tim Keller shared here - that contextualisation is just shuffling around the 10 different points of the gospel that you need…

Enjoyed spending time with Lutheran evangelical leaders from around the world here in Oslo. Had some frank and challenging conversations about: 1. Whether child sponsorship just develops dependency - with a Kenyan church leader. 2. What impact fatherless makes to the next generation - with a Peruvian church leader. 3. How the persecuted church can help the West with its missing generation - from a bishop from Ethiopia. 4. The challenge of empowering parents to disciple their children - with a Norwegian youth worker. I am here giving 4 lectures:…

As part of the ongoing "confidence in the gospel" initiative. I am pleased to be able to share with you an excellent talk from the inimitable Christina Baxter (former principal of St John's Nottingham). I am a big fan of Christina's she has a gravitas about her and a dignity that comes across whenever she is speaking. So prepare to have your minds stretched in this short 12 min talk engaging with the magesterial thinker Karl Barth and what he has to teach us about communicating the gospel in today's…

1. Justin Welby The spiritual leader of 80 million Anglicans was introduced after a moving gospel singing rendition of amazing grace followed by a rip roaring ear drum shattering rock out from Ben Cantelon and Tim Hughes. With all the lights and smoke machines you would expect from at a rock concert at the Albert Hall. Then there was a very professional blip vert introducing us to the global press coverage of the Archbishop’s installation on the high definition LCD screens. Then on comes the mild mannered and incredibly humble…
