one in eight hundred

I found the picture gallery in today's guardian very moving. It was entitled one in eight hundred because those were the odds that a Danish couple were given for having a child with Down's Syndrome. I have linked to the photos from the Guardian site - as produced by Mario Wezel. Why was I moved? I miss our foster daughter, a little girl that we looked after for three and a half years who had Downs Syndrome and these pictures remind me of her. She literally shared joy with everyone…

Well done to Channel 4 for producing a moving and compelling documentary about children in foster care and the need for adoptors. 6000 children in England are waiting in foster care for a forever family – an adoptive family so this is an important and urgent issue. “I wouldn’t chose to buy a sofa online from DFS without going to sit on it first” Project Co-ordinator Bridget Betts It was unfortunate that this was the metaphor that was used to rationalise the Adoption Activity Day, because it seemed to encourage…

Please don’t adopt a Snow Leopard
Posted By :Date :Krish Kandiah | 01-13-2014
Just seen this advert on television. I might be over reacting, but you may know this topic is an important one not just for me but for a lot of people across the UK, most of whom you will never meet. Be careful watching the advert below may change your life... (then again...) Reasons to Adopt a Snow Leopard 1. Snow Leopards  are very cute. 2. Snow Leopards are a wonderful part of God's creation. 3.  Snow Leopards are an endangered species. But genuinely adopting a snow leopard will turn…

I always find New Year an excellent time for a bit of an audit of my life. It's is a double milestone for me, as I have a birthday on 31st December (birthdays are always another great time for life audits). Rather than set New Year's resolutions I find asking good questions and then trying to reorientate my life works for me. Here are 5 questions I am asking myself to prepare for 2014 I thought they might be worth sharing. Take a look and see if there are any…

Really looking forward to the first National Adoption Sunday in the UK. So far 200+ churches have signed up to take part which is great- just another 14800 to go...(it's not too late to join in - just show our video and offering some prayers would be a great start) We have 30 local radio interviews lined up- see below for the list and timings. Many of the local radio sunday morning shows have a phone in slot - so if you fancy phoning in and talking about your positive…

I got to see an advance preview of this film and I loved it. Short Term 12 is a residential care home for young adults. It is staffed by a team of twenty somethings who act as security guards, drug inspectors, counsellors and friends to the young people from troubled backgrounds. The film centres around the relationships of two of the staff: Grace and Mason and two of the young residents of the Short Term 12: Jayden and Marcus. It is Nate’s first dayt working as a carer at the…

Dear Church leader I know you are busy. I know that you are one of the most marketted to group of people on the planet. I know everyone is trying to sell you something - to use their latest resource, their latest course, join in with another national something or other. Someone somewhere is trying to sell you a magic bullet to solve your ministry woes. What I am asking you to do will not solve the problems in your church - in fact it may make your life more…

Evangelicals have a fantastic tradition both of caring for the poor and of strengthening the family . Sadly we often keep these two concerns separate from one another and may have thereby inadvertently exacerbated underlying problems. In this short paper I propose six theological theses that may help us both understand and redress the balance. 1. The family is an essential part of God’s shalom and necessary for the flourishing of creation. The first thing that is said to be wrong in the universe – even before the fall –…

I think church leaders are one of the most marketted to groups of people on the planet. I have worked in church leadership for many years in one form or another and I know it can feel crazy. Everyone wants to tell you the next big thing, and get you to sign up to this course or that cause, this event or that resource, this pledge or that promotion. If you know me at all, you will know that I am passionate about fostering and adoption. I know that scares…

Just a few miles from where I live six girls aged between 11 and 15 years old were raped by a gang of men. The tragedy is that this did not just take place once, but repeatedly over a period of eight years with physical violence involving knives, baseball bats, meat cleavers and hard drugs. The girls were in the care system and despite numerous cries for help, for a long time they were ignored. Sadly many children in the care system are seen as insignificant, irredeemable and inconsequential –…
