New Horizon is a big Christian festival in Northern Ireland’s Northcoast town of Coleraine. The event takes over a University campus for a week, putting up a large 3500 seater tent and uses university facilities for seminars, youthwork and sports. There are probably about 5000 people on site from all over Ireland with some fantastic youth and children's ministry going on during the day.   1 Hospitality There was a wonderful sense of generosity and hospitality – the stewards, staff and guests modelled a very welcoming and warm disposition which…

Looking forward to speaking tonight on the challenge of the missing generation at New Horizon tonight, exploring why so many 20-30s are walking away from church. A little while back Os Guinness argued that the reason that 20 somethings are leaving the church in droves in the USA is because of the [quote_simple]"ugliness of the Christian right"[/quote_simple]. You can see him arguing that here: ( around 11 mins in). My work with The Evangelical Alliance has focussed a lot on this area. So I would really love your wisdom on…

Evangelicals have a fantastic tradition both of caring for the poor and of strengthening the family . Sadly we often keep these two concerns separate from one another and may have thereby inadvertently exacerbated underlying problems. In this short paper I propose six theological theses that may help us both understand and redress the balance. 1. The family is an essential part of God’s shalom and necessary for the flourishing of creation. The first thing that is said to be wrong in the universe – even before the fall –…

Throughout its history the church has often utilised new technologies to help spread the good news of the gospel. Now in an age of ebooks outselling print books it makes sense for digital tools for Bible study to come into their own. The very kind folks at Logos have given me a free upgrade to Logos 5 and I have been getting used to it for the last 5 weeks or so. First let me encourage you why to buy this product if you don't have a digital Bible and…

What a privilege to spend time with Tom Wright and get to talk about evangelism, mission and contextualisation. Everything he says here is off the cuff which is a measure of the breadth of his learning and his communication skills. Tom shows us what we can learn from both Jesus and the Apostle Paul's approach to faithful relevance. I deliberately asked Tom what he though of the idea that Tim Keller shared here - that contextualisation is just shuffling around the 10 different points of the gospel that you need…

Here are some study questions that may help if you are leading a bible study on what heaven is like: List all the things you are looking forward to about heaven? What are your worries about heaven? What are the key bible verses that help you understand the gospel? - How do these verses help you understand what heaven is like? How can we make sure the gospel doesn’t become reduced to a “get out of hell free card” a sub-biblical individualistic escapism? Read revelation 21:1-5 how do these verses…

I write the following as a huge fan of the BBC and its work. The BBC literally saved my life when my wife and I were being evacuated from Albania in 1997. So I write these things as a friend of the Corporation. The 2007 report produced by Richard Tait, the Chairman of the Impartiality Steering Group recommended that the BBC should move away from a model of impartiality based on a see-saw seeking to balance opposing views to a Wagon Wheel where a broad spectrum of different and dissonant…

[youtube link="https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DHQBoLo31Ns" width="590" height="315"] Here's a great little Tim Keller video we made for the Evangelical Alliance Council meeting a while back. If you have not come across him before there's a great intro but if you are a long term fan there's some fresh insights into how we preach the gospel in our cities and towns. I am not sure I am comfortable with his view on contextualisation but you'll have to wait for another post on that. Hope you enjoy it.

I think church leaders are one of the most marketted to groups of people on the planet. I have worked in church leadership for many years in one form or another and I know it can feel crazy. Everyone wants to tell you the next big thing, and get you to sign up to this course or that cause, this event or that resource, this pledge or that promotion. If you know me at all, you will know that I am passionate about fostering and adoption. I know that scares…
