I know its not even Easter yet but some churches are pulling together ideas for the teaching programmes so i thought I would share with you a few ideas for teaching series. Regular followers of the blog will know that I am a big fan of consecutive expository preaching series. I have a blog brewing on how to decide which biblical books to look at in which order for a church - so keep an eye out for that. In the mean time we have a couple of books that…

I believe the future of Christian influence in the UK will be different from the past. It will not be due to a top down assertion of power, but rather the faithful presence of Christians who live for God's kingdom in every sphere of society. If we catch a vision for this we will not only see more young adults survive into a life of mature adult faith we will see the light of the gospel not just transform lives but our institutions and culture too. With this in mind…

Here's a fantastic video on the secret to remaining passionately committed to justice. To be honest it helps to explain why I believe adoption is the seed idea that will transform our churches to being communities that seek to demonstrate and proclaim the love of God. Once we see justice not as an abstract concept but caring for those we love, not in a partisan way, but in a loving your neighbour, loving your enemy way; then we will spend ourselves seeking justice. Watch it and let me know what…

Enjoying spending time with the Salt and Light national leaders conference, here in sunny Teeside. Its been a pleasure to rub shoulders with so many mission minded leaders keen to explore ways of reaching their communities. I have been running a stream called “Engage” focussing on connecting the gospel with the opportunities, longings and challenges of our culture. I have enjoyed the warm hospitality of this network of churches on numerous occasions and in my experience they have a wonderful family trait of humility and generosity. Openness to Connect with…

Looking forward to speaking at the Salt and Light churches national leaderhsip conference. I leading a teaching stream on Engaging with culture. I thought I'd ask for a bit of social media wisdom as I suggest 10 ways in which church pastors can up their cultural game. In the rest of the seminar I will be exploring how we bring scripture and spiritual discernment into dialogue with culture we engage with. With your suggestions we can make this list better I am sure: 1. Broaden your inputs Its very easy…

Really excited to be working with UCCF in the Midlands to help equip students to get a vision for life beyond university. Here's the rough cut of script I recorded today for students going to the Midlands new leaders training weekend this week. Friends there’s a national crisis in the church with what has become known as the missing generation. Christians aged between 20 and 30 are the least likely to attend church across the UK. In fact nationally they are half as likely to go to church as any…

Google gave a glimpse into the future today - with this sneak peak of what life lived through "Google glass" will feel like. I must admit i find it both a cool and chilling future. I love the idea of being connected and that my reality is augmented by interaction with friends, sharing video on demand etc. But because these videos feel like you are looking through the eyes of the Terminator or Robocop its raises questions whether this form of technology will help us to become more human or…

I spent a very interesting afternoon with a group at the very impressive News International HQ today. I was speaking on the subject of "Ethical leadership in a digital culture" and had a very interesting dialogue with the attendees. We talked about how we can rebuild confidence in organisations and institutions that have lost their "public contract of trust." I focussed on the resources that the gospel brings for knowing your identity in uncertain times and developing grace based integrity because of what God has already done for us and…

Had a great time with the students at London School of Theology today. I was speaking on Isaiah 1 about what kind of worship God is looking for. I argued that we need to pursue intimacy and activism. They have got some brilliant people on the teaching staff including my good friends Sam Hargreaves and Geraldine Lattie. We talked about Isaiah’s stinging critique of Israel’s worship: [quote_box author="Isaiah Chapter One" profession=""]Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations – I cannot bear your…

Looking forward to speaking at the News International Christian Fellowship meeting on Wednesday. As you can imagine for an organisation that has been through a lot of difficult press lately the Christians there need some encouragement. The event will be open to everyone so if you know anyone that works at News International do let them know about the event. I plan to talk about how to grow in integrity, adaptability and wisdom. I would value your prayers and any wisdom or advice you may have for me on how…
