This was a jaw dropping video. It made me reflect on the absolute fragility of life. I listened to a radio interview this morning from a Holocaust survivor who wrestled with that concept. She wasn’t sure if it was a miracle or a lucky break that had enabled her to survive Auschwitz – but nevertheless she felt grateful. I guess the gratitude points her to the idea that there was someone to be grateful to?

I heard the same interview. It was interesting that John Humphries pressed her on the point of where she thought God was in Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz – her response was that it was down to the Rabbis to answer that one, but made it clear she still believed in God, despite all that happened. When pressed on the fact she had said ‘God was asleep’ during the Holocaust, she dumbfounded Humphries by saying it was a joke! A joke in the face of the most incomprehensible evil the world can recall, that made even the most faithful question where God was! No wonder Humphries had no idea how to respond.

Not sure what that says, other than that faith can survive even the inexplicable hell of something like the Holocaust, and that we need someone to thank for the small miracles of daily life.

thanks Steve – I didnt get to hear the whole interview – interesting that Humphries didn’t know how to respond – he didnt know what to do when the lovely lady popped a joke about the anaesthetist for her operation who had never heard of Auschwitz – he asked How did that make you feel – she said “I was unconscious the next minute”

Jaw dropping indeed. My first thought was about the importance of car seats for children and seat belts generally. Life is fragile but there are things we can do to protect it.
