Syria’s War on Children

Syria’s War on Children

Just a read a damning report from War Child arguing that the Syrian conflict has been a war on children.

“ Children have not been spared the horror of Syria’s crackdown. Syrian security forces have killed, arrested, and tortured children in their homes, their schools, or on the streets. In many cases, security forces have targeted children just as they have targeted adults.”

The report argues that “Neither side in this conflict has distinguished itself by protecting children in the areas they control.”

Children in detention have been sexually abused, children as young as 8 years old have been forced to take part in hostilities. The mass refugee crisis apparently is made up of 50% children and young people.

You can read the full report here.

What can we do?

– ofcourse pray. Lets call out to the God who is the protector of widows and orphans to intervene and bring his peace.

Social Media

I am not sure what we can do to make a difference here. Perhaps the more we raise this on twitter and blogs – the more we give our MPs political elbow room to get more involved. MPs are influenced by public opinion because they need to get re-elected – if we show our politicians this is something that we all care about – it empowers them to get more stuck in.

I am open to ideas friends – what else shall we do – we can’t stand by and pretend this isn’t happening…

The Syrian flag is from Wikimedia Commons.

We used this prayer for Syria written by dr Fred Drummond in our service last Sunday. Others may like to use it in the same way?

    A Prayer for Syria

    20 July 2012

    Jesus wept.

Precious God, what makes you weep?
What are the things in this world that break your heart?
Glorious God we pray for the nation of Syria.
    We ask for your mercy.
We pray for children who have lost parents and parents, children.
The voiceless, who sleep to the rhythm of their tears.
For all those who are chained by fear, O God please bring peace.
Lord, we pray that you may raise up peacemakers and those with generous loving hearts.
We ask that you may give discernment and courage to politicians both national and international and others with influence, that a road of peace may be found.
May justice flow and bring healing to this land.
For the honour of your name,

Written by Dr Fred Drummond, National Director of the Evangelical Alliance (EA) in Scotland, and UK Director of Prayer.
